After Impact Golf: Flick your wrist

golf club drivers

Many golfers will bow their wrist during a swing. This can lead to the clubface being closed or faded. Bowing the wrist allows for more solid shot making, but it can also cause clubshaft angulation and forward shaft lean. Fortunately, golf clubs are designed to have a finite degree of clubshaft angulation at impact. Golfers should expect their clubface to be closed at least 30° relative to the line of the ball-target line at the position P4. Players will vary in how much they close their clubfaces. When swinging, it is important to pay attention at the wrist position. If you find that your clubface often slices or hooks, check your wrists for cupping. This is a common flaw in golf swings that can be fixed by using simple wrist-hinge techniques.

The DH-hand release action occurs during impact and is best suited to a golf bowed wrist technique. This technique can lead to clubshaft angulation in the latter part of a swing. A bowing wrist can give you more control over your clubface and allow you to hit the ball further. According to some golf instructors bowing the wrist at the lead wrist is believed to close the clubface, and make it squarer at impact. Bowing the lead wrist can actually increase clubface closing. This phenomenon can occur if the lead hand is radially deviated.

The following images capture the lead wrist bowing technique used by three professional golfers. The bowed wrist is used by Collin Morikawa. Collin Morikawa uses the bowed hand to move the lead hand forward and towards the target. Then, he bows his lead wrist during the downswing. He maintains his bowing until impact. In the downswing, he will increase his bowing. He doesn't bow his lead wrist in the first followthrough as much as he does later on the swing. Collin Morikawa holds a weak grip on his lead hand.

Another pro golfer, Henrik Stenson, uses a neutral lead hand grip. Throughout the downswing he can maintain a straight line alignment of his lower forearm’s lower radial bones and his clubhead. Henrik Stenson does have a bowed wrist at impact. He still has his LFFW/GFLW at P4. He also sports a bowed trail wrist.

Jon Rahm, on the other hand, uses early lead forearm Supination and increased lead wrist Bowing. Just before impact, he begins to bow his right wrist. This increases during the downswing. He also has a very bowing right wrist at P7.4. Bowing the lead wrist alters the right-hand's DH hand release action. This is due to the lead wrist moving 14 degrees in the direction that the "lead hand extends" between P6-impact. The left wrist, on the other hand, is bowed at impact, even though it is not moving rapidly during the early followthrough.

Clubshaft angulation can be caused by a bowing wrist. This happens during the second half of a swing. The angulation of the clubshaft can increase if the lead wrist becomes increasingly ulnarly bent.

How is golf played

Golf is played on an 18-hole golf course that follows a set of rules known as the Rules of Golf.

The first stroke is taken behind a designated teeing area. Players alternate hitting balls into holes that are at different distances from the teeing area. Each hole has a number of strokes that are determined by its distance from the teeing zone.

There are three types main shots in the game golf:

  • A drive shot involves players using clubs to hit and extend the ball. This shot is considered to be the most important.
  • An approach shot requires that players hit the ball within the specified area of the hole.
  • A putt where players try to place the ball in the cup using rolling it along the ground.

A player must complete each hole without missing any of his/her own putts. Failure to do so will result in a loss of one stroke per unmade putt.

You can also play with a partner, caddy, or someone who will hold the club and carry it during a round. The caddie has no influence on the outcome of the match, but they can give advice about strategy or etiquette.

What's the difference in a driving range and an 18-hole putting green?

A driving range allows players to practice hitting balls from distances of 50 yards to 300 yards. Players use putting greens to practice their skills.
